The Importance of Elective Classes

Elective classes in elementary school provide students with the opportunity to explore their interests and develop new skills. They allow students to branch out from the core subjects, such as math, science, and English, and discover new areas of study. Electives can also provide students with a sense of control over their learning, which can increase motivation and engagement. Additionally, electives can help students develop new talents, which can positively impact their self-esteem and future academic and career decisions. At THINKschool, our curriculum is packed with supplemental and breadth courses, which allow students to dabble in the wide array of knowledge that life has to offer. Whether culinary, chess, or STEAM, students get to explore a multitude of classes each year, from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Culinary classes, as an example, in elementary school play a significant role in teaching children important life skills and promoting healthy habits. They help students learn about nutrition, food preparation, and cooking techniques, all of which are essential for leading a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. Furthermore, foundational skills such as math and reading comprehension are required to be a successful cook and are implemented in each step.

As another example, art classes play a crucial role in a child's overall development by fostering creativity, promoting self-expression, and building problem-solving skills. They help children learn to observe the world around them, understand different cultures, and appreciate the arts. Art classes can improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, as well as develop critical thinking, perseverance, and communication skills. All these benefits contribute to the overall well-being and academic success of a child.

Art, a commonly found class, and culinary, a not-so-commonly found class, are both staples at THINKschool. Each subject, class, and activity serves its own benefits, but the importance of a well-rounded curriculum and atmosphere for young learners is a sure way to get them excited and prepared for the world.
